From apple pie to apple soap, it’s all about apples at Ros and David Sutton’s Sutton’s Juice Factory and Cider, which was established at Thulimbah in 1994. After expanding the orchard, they added a café to showcase everything about apples. The Shed Cafe offers a range of simple, honest farmhouse-style food made using seasonal and local produce and a range of products. It makes a great stop for morning tea or lunch. Sutton’s uses old-fashioned, traditional recipes that have been in use for generations for their preserves. Many are made without pectin, preservatives, artificial colours or flavours and additives. Their apple preserves include apple jelly, apple butter, apple chutney, apple sauce, apple and berry fruits, apple and citrus fruits. There’s also tomato sauce and tomato relish from Granite Belt tomatoes and cumquat marmalade made from cumquats grown in the café garden orchard. It’s a quick two-and-a-half-hour drive from Brisbane to the pretty Granite Belt town of Thulimbah when a slice of their apple pie is on the list. Look for the Big Apple on the New England Highway, and you’ll find Suttons on the opposite side of the highway. Eat in or take away some of their goodness for a picnic.
Guru Tip
Sutton’s is famous for its legendary apple pie served with apple cider ice cream and whipped cream. Their Limoncello is another winner.
